Nestled in the northern end of Alpine town of Helen, Georgia, Hofer’s Bakery & Café offers an authentic taste of Germany to locals and tourists in its bakery and café. Tourists will tell you, Hofer’s is always a must-visit on their itinerary; locals will say Hofer’s is the best breakfast in town.
From the minute you walk in, your senses are greeted with the smell of fresh baked bread and pastries surrounding you. We aren’t 100 percent sure, but we think Heaven probably smells close to the way Hofer’s does, with the aromas of chocolate, buttercream, and cinnamon forming a delectable cacophony of scents. The bakers at Hofer’s get there early and bake fresh throughout the day until 3 p.m. Hofer’s offers 10 different breads daily, including Sourdough, World Cup, Hausbrot, and pretzel rolls. (Breads can also be ordered online.)
The bakery case will make you believe in love at first sight. Traditional German pastries like strudels and fritters are just a few of the favorites, but to say everything in Hofer’s is delicious is an understatement. Other bakery favorites include: cream puffs overflowing with Bavarian crème, traditional Plum Cake, Sacher Torte (chocolate with apricot filling), Schwarzwälder Kirsch (Black Forest Torte), and German Chocolate Torte. Cheesecakes also line a shelf — including the decadent Turtle Cheesecake.
The cafe side of Hofer’s serves breakfast and lunch daily. Guests can choose from authentic fluffy Belgian waffles, homemade Corned Beef Hash, Mountain Climber’s Breakfast, and more to fuel them up for a day of sight seeing and hiking. Lunch offers 18 sandwich choices and 16 entrees — including yummy Reubens and Hofer’s Hot Pastrami on Rye. You definitely won’t leave hungry when you eat at Hofer’s. But since you have to pass through the bakery on your way out, you can always grab some strudel to go.
You can take in the sights of passerbys as you enjoy Hofer’s Biergarten. Open on the weekends through November, the Biergarten is the perfect place to relax, enjoy a cold German beer, and dine al fresco under the beautiful North Georgia sky. During Octoberfest, you can also enjoy live music, making it the perfect place to unwind and kick off your weekend.
Hofer’s gift shop offers imported chocolates, coffee, and souvenirs. Jams and jellies line the shelves for you to take home to spread on a piece of Hofer’s toasted bread.
Come see why Hofer’s has won Trip Advisor’s Certificate of Excellence for five consecutive years! The tourists– and locals–know Hofer’s has German hospitality, indulgent pastries & baked goods, and delicious sandwiches.
